If you have been following me or at least have been through my bio, you would know that I love traveling and I am a blogger. Well, other than writing blogs for my own website, I write for my clients as well. As a freelance writer, I make sure I follow a routine so that I can get work done and enough free time everyday.
Before I created this routine for myself, every day used to be extremely stressful. I would work till late, skip lunch at times, keep snoozing alarms, submit content a few minutes before the deadline, have multiple projects scheduled up for the same day, and try to complete two tasks at once. Not a pleasing scenario, is it? Freelancing is about freedom and I wasn’t able to enjoy that, so I had to introduce change.
Creating a routine helped me a lot in both work as well as life. So, here I am, sharing my routine with you guys because I believe a lot of you are either trying or wish to try freelancing and this post can help you.
Wake up at 5 in the Morning
To start a day on the right foot, it is extremely important to wake up early in the morning. Now, waking up early does not mean you have to wake up at 5, you can choose to wake up at 8 as well but any time after that is late. I personally started waking up at 5 during the pandemic and truly fell in love with the morning time. So when I decided to create my routine, I had to include the blissful morning time.
The peaceful early morning time allows me to wake up calm and do everything at a relatively slower pace. I love slow mornings, they are less stressful.
Spend First 2 Hours of the Day Without Phone
I believe all of us have had this habit of scrolling social media as soon as we wake up. I used to respond to texts with one eye open and then go back to sleep. This habit had to go. I have this “no negativity” rule for the morning. I cannot handle negative thoughts, hate, and triggering news so I just stay away from it for at least the first half of my day.
I just play some meditation music and do stuff like stretching, meditation, writing in my journal, making bed, taking my dogs out for their business, brushing my teeth, and taking a shower.
Have Breakfast and Make a To Do List for the Day
I like having a nice, hot mug of freshly brewed coffee in the morning. But to take care of my health and avoid anxiety, I now first have a healthy breakfast and then bring the coffee to my table. This is the time where I first enjoy a few sips of coffee in peace and then finally start going through my emails, writing down the deliverables, their deadlines, and then I prioritize tasks and make a to-do list for the day.
Along with the tasks, I include at least one topic in my to do list that I need to get familiar with. Usually it is related to digital marketing and freelance writing but there are days when I include psychology and meditation related courses as well. Depending on the length of the sessions, I complete at least one session/chapter/video every day. This helps me in enhancing my skill set and getting better knowledge on how to upgrade the quality of my content according to the market trends.
Work Work Work
That’s it, I start working. I work from around 8:30 AM to 1 PM continuously. Then I have my lunch and after that I either go out for a walk or hit the gym depending on the weather and my mood of course. I take my dogs out again during this break time as well. Then from 4 PM to 7 PM I complete the rest of the tasks. There are days when I have extra work, on such days I restart at 3:30 PM instead of 4 and extend the working hours till 9 PM. I have a rule of not working after 9 PM no matter what.
Wind up Your Day on a Fun Note
After work, I prefer doing something fun before making dinner. I have recently started playing Minecraft and tried these Minecraft Survival Servers. It’s a really cool way of ending the day. However, to not get bored or hooked on the game, I also end my day with a good book, a strong joint, or wine.
That’s it. This is what the majority of my days as a freelance writer and blogger looks like.
